I have finally admitted to myself that for me, New Years Resolutions just don’t work. – I don’t keep them, they make me feel guilty, that I "should" or I " must". What could we do instead? I’ve found some great questions from some amazing people, that I thought worth sharing .....
How would you sum up 2013 in ONE word?
this one reeeeeallly made me think. I have been accused of over analysing. Actually, I admit it (grudgingly, of course!) I often DO over analyse. So obviously I wanted far more words. Many many many words to describe 2013. And then I actually thought about this. And realised that the best, most amazing things that happened this year, whether they be the really exciting, earth-shatteringly exciting ones, or just the “happy, contented sigh” ones, happened when I didn’t obsessively analyse. So I chose the word “SPONTANEOUS” And trust me, that is hard to admit!
What word would you like to sum up 2014?
Oh another challenge for the over-analytical...... OK, I’ll stop with that, they’re all going to be challenging aren’t they?! But one thing I have definitely learnt this year (there’s another question worth asking yourself – What have you learnt this year that you’d like to take into next year?) is that sometimes, it’s important to just stop analysing (which could also be categorised under “Procrastinating”..) and act. Write SOMETHING down, press PUBLISH, SEND or PRINT. Just get it done, get it out there. Then see what happens. So, what’s my word for 2014? ALIVENESS. And trust me it pains my pedantic self to write that, but that word best sums up how I want to feel! (and, it is in a few dictionaries , I swear)
What new experiences do you want in 2014?
I resisted the urge to list parachuting (again !) lose half my body weight, learn a new language, or change the world.
Instead I admitted that I need to learn to relax. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really good at doing nowt! But that’s not quite the same. I can easily do nothing, whilst my brain races with all the things I “should”, “must” or “need to” be doing; writing the mental "To Do" list then repeating it ad infinitum in my head, whilst “chilling out”. Relaxing to me means being able to actually switch my brain off, to feel calm. And it’s something I want more of in 2014. Somehow.
And then in complete contrast I want to do exciting stuff. Bit vague that, especially for an over analyst. But that’ll do for now (look at me, just hitting publish!)
And I want to be brave enough to be vulnerable – to take a risk, to admit I ain’t perfect, but I’m enough instead of locking myself away to avoid the risk of not everyone loving me or what I do!
Oh and I’d really love to experience working with lots more people to help them achieve what they want – that’s been one of the most brilliant things of 2013, seeing what the people I have coached have achieved. Just fantastic!
So, there are lots, and lots, more questions. What do you need to change to make “THAT word, the word of 2014? What do you want to start now? Who should you involve? How will you know you’re on track? ........
I said Resolutions don’t work.... What I did discover last year was that writing stuff down works! And having the opportunity to really talk through stuff, to analyse it in a constructive, focused way, facilitated by someone else, and then to make actual decisions and commitments’ about actions, works. Especially when that someone can ask some questions that those people who are our friends or family wouldn’t dare ask, and make the challenges that they wouldn’t dare to make but that we actually really need.
If you feel that would be a good starting point to 2014, why not get in touch? Or add a comment, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
